"Joker, The Dark Smile Begins" - Trailer Review

April 03, 2019
joker review trailer

Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for the highly anticipated upcoming DC Comics adaptation "Joker". The movie is a character-driven study of the famous Batman villain that stars Joaquin Phoenix in and as "Joker", and is based on an idea hatched by co-writer and director Todd Phillips. Their previous films like The Hangover trilogy and War Dogs flirted with the dark territory but that never went on full drama. The idea was to create a one-off  DC adaptation unconnected to other DC films like Batman v Superman or Wonder Woman. This new Joker movie isn’t expected to tie into those movies series.

The trailer is pretty impressive, and the Martin Scorsese influence is extremely prevalent. This looks to be a dark and gritty, twisted drama about a troubled man who is continually beaten down until he decides to turn pyscho in a single line of the storyline. The trailer starts with a shot of Manhattan doubling as Gotham City. This trailer, shows Phoenix's like a failed stand up, slowly touching upon the reality. At one frame, he stares into the mirror and slowly pushes mouth into a horrifying grin. While talking to the therapist, he says "my mother always tells me to smile and put on a happy face". This scene seems more grief than a comic book movie. He has beaten down by mobbers in a subway, while he holds a banner "everything must go!!", and at last, he had bitten by the same from mobbers. In another time, he dances in tightly whities derelict apartment, apart from the reality.

"is it just me", the Joker muses, "Or  is it getting crazier out there?."

Some positives spotted from the trailer:-
*The frames and shots were exceptional.
*A Good background score and sounding chosen.
* Detailed version of Joker, but questionable shall it wins over a huge fan base of Joker.
*Seems well-captured transformation of Flack to Joker, it's horrific "Backbone Visuals"
*Laugh the smile of Joker
*strong performance

Arthur’s dialogue: “I used to think my life was a tragedy. But now I believe it’s a comedy.”
We see Joker dancing down a long set of stairs.
The last shot is Joker, in full makeup but not smiling, getting into an elevator...

Good piece of art loading from DC

Oru Yamandan Prema Kadha" Teaser Review

March 31, 2019
REVIEW OYPK

Dulquer is back in Malayalam cinema with "Oru Yamandan Prema Kadha" Teaser. The movie also stars Soubin Shahir, Salim Kumar, Vishnu and Samyuktha Menon plays as a female lead. The film has music by Nadirshah and Directed by BC Noufal, bankrolled by Anto Joseph films written by Vishnu-Bibin George combo!

Teaser review:-

Duration: 46secs!!

The first shot of Teaser begins with a colourful opening, and a Hindi lyrical song. And social stare commentary by Salim Kumar, which leads to Intro of DQ. All the frames were set up to give us a  festive mode feel in full swing of colours. DQ intro jumping, where the first time for him in a screen. That also in a crispy and mass. Moreover, his style and outlooks reveal, as a local boy may be an artist or painter or electrician.
Vishnu's role was clearly specified "A Blind".

We expected that the Oru Yamandan Prema Kadha will be a "festive moded romantic movie with lots of fun and social/society oriented theme end". There must be social awareness since the duo scriptwriters are already proven with their last two combo flicks. "A comedic mass entertainment"!!. Since these two duo scriptwriters were still in acting, one of them were framed in Teaser as Blind character (Vishnu). Maybe Sometimes Bibin George (2nd writer) will be a suspense character or chance of villain who creates a breakthrough in the film. Since these two scriptwriters first and most aim in the film industry to act. So this can happen. Not sure, Just a Guess by a serious movie lover.

So, get ready for a summer holidays treat of DQ & crew. Expecting another  "A  Mass Comedy entertainment"

Tail end: It's been a while since DQ had a release in Malayalam. So, this will be a perfect shot of entertainer

Movie Review: Airaa, let down lady superstar this time!

March 29, 2019
Airaa

Airaa movie Review:

"Airaa; a good content oriented 2nd half but the  illogical horror presentations, let down the movie totally"

Rating: 2.3/5

Detailed Review :

Airaa a horror flick, revolves around a young journalist Yamuna (lady superstar) and Amudhan (Kalaiyarasan). As its a horror film, the movie should follow some templates act of revenge, backup story, jump scares and pulsating BGM. Airaa had enough of these but these elements backlogged movie due to the illogical presentation.

The movie begins with the intro of Yamuna, and she changes over from journalist to YouTuber and the situation raised! In between some haunting scenes as of usual patterns. Meanwhile, Amudhan (Kalaiyarasan) were encountered with deaths happening around him. A parallel narration of two personal stories. The first half aims to induce fear in the audience's mind but that doesn't work well even Nayanthara - Yogibabu funs not performed well as expected.

Airaa's strength lies in Its second half, which showcases the story of Bhavani who in search of happiness in life. As grief Bhavani, Nayanthara is excellent and make us empathise with her. Director Sarjun has dealt with many social issues such as bullying, abuse, rape, and many more emotions in the 2nd half. The movie message is clear, it will strike on your face well. Use Butterfly effect is clever. But pre-climax is a huge letdown and spoils the entire feel of the movie.

Nayanthara in a dual role delivered an arresting performance with her expressions from Bhavani. Kalaiyarasan, Maathevan and Blue sattai cameo appearance was neat and convincing. Well captured Visuals, but some places! and also a neat BGM score.

Budding Director Sarjun with Budding Writer Priyanka, can't win the heart's of the audience but proves they had good content, but poor execution and logical presentation. Sure they will come back and stands in industry.

Tail end: VFX shots butterflies #LOL, Helicam shot over windmills, art dept lazy work for haunting experience in paatti house 😝

Movie Review: Super Deluxe, a slow paced journey through different life.Brave attempt!!

March 29, 2019
DELUXE

Super Deluxe Movie Review:

Rating; 3.3/5

" Super Deluxe four stories of four different people, their strugglings and how they met each other, a brave attempt"

Firstly, super deluxe shows off the life of Mukhil & Vembu (Fahad & Samantha)and the situation they face, next followed by Shilpa's life of transgender (VJS), the adventures of Soori & his friends and his MOTHER. finally, Aruptham (director Mysskin) whose life changed after a tsunami.

The first half of the Movie runs throughout narrow intro to the problems faced by these four peoples life. The first half seems starters of emotions, performance, sentimental & hearts touching dialogue and more adventures funny moments by Soori & his friends. Interval block was stunningly surprised by Director Thiagarajan Kumararaja. As usual child artists ruled the first half amazingly.

The second half begins with creating connections /coincidence with different people's. Second half journey with super deluxe is full of emotions, sentimental and powerful scenes from Shilpa's character. RAMYA Krishnan nailing performance and Mysskin outstanding signature style of acts. MORE Likable performance from Fahad Faasil & Samantha, and also facial expressions from Soori crew teams were mind-blowing 😍😉!!
Pyscho performance from BERLIN the police officer overruled the audience hearts and twists begin with a WTF moment, and thereafter movie execution wins viewer's heart. BTFLY eff😜!

And also there are characters like a quirky don, publicity crazy politicians, local police officer, unwanted neighbours, unethical doctors and the more crazy world which influences the lives of these four groups.

There is black humour, WTF moment, political and social commentary, double ended dialogues, and musing words which ended up on what it means to be living on earth.

Good execution and script by Thiagarajan Kumararaja, well background support from Yuvan musical, And Perfect Visuals. And high performance makes this journey engaging throughout 3hrs trip.

Tail end: Twist & WTF moment was out of the universe, That slaps audience and in confused desi mode. #LOL and also there is a narrative error pointed out. Don't know sure, needs ur comments!!

Lucifer Malayalam Movie review: Devil took charge of Molly Wood

March 28, 2019

Lucifer Movie Review :

"A Clean Mass Entertainment for Lalettan Fans".

Lucifer review

Critic Rating: 3.3/5

Lucifer Movie, a well-cooked fan made movie for all viewers especially double treat for laletten fans. LUCIFER Movie showcased a political thriller, but there are no big twists & suspense Elements. The movie revolves around a political leader, his family and political party. As the trailer reveals movie full story nothing big happened in the full movie. BUT FULL MAGIC CREATED BY PRITHVIRAJ, as he says "the way he wants to see him" which needed by laletten fans. First-time Murali Gopi is written such a Liberal script. He wrote as usual political drama story which already screened earlier. The Director brilliance makes the movie in more mass and goosebumps moments throughout the film. ENERGETIC performance from Mohanlal makes movie outstanding and wins the heart of his followers. One mass stunts performed well by Mohanlal and captured amazingly.

The first half of the movie, flews as an intro for the political drama, even Mohanlal came screen fully after 30mins of rendering. Indirajith nailed with his character for the first part-time. Mass dialogues, Mass scene's, Mass fight and strong direction with high DOP makes the  First half very well engaging thriller and interval block was also a good one!!

The second half begins with a tiny lag of flashback scenes but immediately the director changed the pace of Movie with some political strategies. And also some good influences of certain guest appearances. Movie flews narrowly with shades of some epic old movies storyline. Even Mohan Lal creates his magic in all forms. While movie entering into climax, the director chooses for a song that felt badly (pathetic song). I think the climax was too short and maybe an easy ending. To make it perfect he makes chosen that. Since Anti-hero of the movie were already revealed in the first half itself. It's a free ball.

Tail end: finally Murali Gopi came into normal movie storylines. His wondering screenplay missed.

Kesari Movie Review | 2019

March 21, 2019
KESARI

Critic's Rating: 4.0/5

Kesari Story: A retelling of the Battle of Saragarhi where 21 Sikh soldiers fought against an Afghan army of 10000 men in the year 1897.

Kesari Review: The Battle of Saragarhi is considered to be one of the most inspiring stories of human valour and bravery, not just in India, but the world over. Director Anurag Singh’s film Kesari is a fitting tribute to this story of Sikh soldiers. It’s a compelling war drama that combines strong emotions with blood-soaked action and retells an important chapter from the annals of Indian history. The film’s best moments are fuelled by a towering performance by Akshay Kumar.

Kesari is a powerful film because it has an innate sense of emotional intelligence and raw shock value, too. It showcases the atrocity of war and violence unabashedly, always condemning the bloodshed at hand and forever celebrating the bravery of men. It’s not just an action film, it’s a war drama that spends time in establishing its main characters and gives the audience a detailed and authentic look at a story of true patriotism. The film is beautifully shot by Anshul Chobey and the production design Subrata Chakraborty and Amit Ray are equally important in making the dry and dusty setting of North-West province (now in Khyber, Pakistan) look authentic. Here’s where the CGI also makes a big contribution in making the snow-capped backdrop of the place look pitch perfect. The editing, sound design and action choreography in Kesari are all top-notch. The inclusion of Gatka, Sikh martial art is a fine moment, too. Even the costumes by Sheetal Sharma add to the intricate details. Anurag Singh’s entire technical team deserves a standing ovation for this film.
You can’t craft a solid film without good writing and that’s where the efforts of Girish Kohli and Anurag Singh shine through as well. The writers have seamlessly woven in moments of high drama, humour, wit, sarcasm, tragedy and action into the narrative. The best part is, there’s also a lot of historical wisdom as the film keeps referencing Sikh and Islamic legends. At one point, the chief antagonist declares wars on the British and Sikh soldiers inciting jihad and his fellow leader reminds him that Islam does not propagate violence in the first place. Such is the detailed writing that every character in the film has an emotional point that helps the audience identify with them.

At the forefront of all the action though is the central character of Havildar Ishar Singh. The last time a Sardar was as fierce and awe-inspiring was in Gadar. Ishar Singh is as much Anurag Singh’s character as it is Akshay’s and he’s the embodiment of true Sikh values and pride. His nobility is a match for his bravery and to watch him command the emotions and gusto in Kesari is pure joy. This is what cinematic heroes should be like and Akshay Kumar does complete justice to the role. Parineeti Chopra gets a small but impactful role, and it’s her character’s fun banter with Akshay that puts a smile on your face and her tears break your heart. Rakesh Chaturvedi Om as the Afghan leader is very convincing with his radicalism, too.

With technical brilliance, intricate writing and thundering performances, Kesari is a loud war cry that evokes strong feelings of patriotism and it also wrenches your heart with its climactic tragedy. The visceral power of its visuals and emotions is staggering.

MR. & MS. ROWDY MOVIE REVIEW

MR.& MS. ROWDY MOVIE REVIEW

Critic's Rating: 3.5/5

Story

Appu and his gang are the local goons of their village and once, during an 'operation,' Poornima joins their group. And then?

Review

Survival is the biggest challenge for someone, whose life has self-designed an image for them, that doesn't suit their basic nature. And what if this image is that of a gangster?

Mr and Ms Rowdy is the tale of a handful of 'accidental gangsters,' who had a lousy start in their life. Things just keep getting worse for them and one day, they meet a girl. Is she a damsel in distress? Yes and no. The comedic plot shows how their hard-knock lives reach a turning point after her entry into their world.

review rowdy

Expertly performed and well-executed, Mr and Ms Rowdy has all the stereotypical elements of the genre, but it is a fun film that keeps you engaged throughout its length. The cast, consisting of Kalidas Jayaram who plays Appu, Ganapathy who plays Asif, Shebin Benson and the rest are apt, to play a set of villains who have that inner conflict being 'decent' fellows within despite their goon images. The film strikingly remains calm and confident, though the tale isn't any complex, convoluted story. Its outcomes are also evident but the fun is in the telling, which is done well.

Kalidas' body language suits that of a young gang leader and his team members have also performed well as the good-hearted 'quotation team.' Aparna Balamurali as the bold Poornima is apt and Linta Jeethu has also done well for a first-time scribe.

rowdy

The film isn't without a few distasteful elements, the first of which is a dialogue delivered by a female character, when a well-behaved man tries to scare her away, pretending to misbehave with her. As he places his hands on her and then hesitates to harass her, she says, 'Only true men can do such things.' In an otherwise fine movie, this didn't sound a very smart line to be added at this age. That too for the kind of person that she is. As compared to the pacing of the first half, the second is a bit too limp. The climax is also evidently not well thought out and came off as a bit too rushed.

Mr and Ms Rowdy can sure be a great one-time watch, for the chemistry of the lead actors and the comedy in their goofiness.

KODATHI SAMAKSHAM BALAN VAKEEL MOVIE REVIEW AND VIDEOS

February 21, 2019

KODATHI SAMAKSHAM BALAN VAKEEL MOVIE REVIEW AND VIDEOS

Critic's Rating: 3.0/5

Story:
Balakrishnan is a struggling lawyer who hasn't made much of a career because of his stutter and a past riddled by guilt. But his plain and sober life is about to change with a case, in which he is being played as a pawn in a conspiracy larger than anything he was prepared for.

Review:

Written and directed by B Unnikrishnan, Kodathi Samaksham Balan Vakeel is the first time that the writer-director pairs up with Dileep. The choice of the actor isn't surprising one bit, because this is Balakrishnan's tale of redemption from being an underdog riddled by guilt, into his own personal confident self. It is the redemptive tale of a fallen hero, whom the film demands us to love.

Balakrishnan's guilt from his past has made him a stutterer, and that has also affected his career. But soon, he finds himself a pawn in a conspiracy larger than anything he ever wanted to be a part of. Kodathi Samaksham Balan Vakeel is Balan's tale of redemption from guilt.

Siddique is at his best as Somashekharan Pillai, Balakrishnan's father. Some of the crass chauvinistic dialogues aside, his comic timing and refreshing take on the father of a protagonist lifts the movie on its fulcrum. Aju Varghese playing the clueless thug sidekick to the protagonist is a character made to look cliched. But his performance is what saves the character with grace. Since playing the good-bad cop in Mayaanadhi, Harish Uthaman settles into his character proving to us that he is built to go places. Artistes like Priya Anand and Sajid Yahiya come, do a good job and go. Akhil George, who cranks the camera for Kodathi Samaksham Balan Vakeel gives us crisp and beautiful frames, with substantial and fairly evident help from the art department. The seemingly bland item song apart from the songs in the movie are average.

The choice to cast Dileep is obvious from the narrative of the character because this character is right up his alley. However, as Balakrishnan, Dileep seems slightly controlled and hinged in his performance. Suraj Venjarammood is back playing the selfish sidekick who gets into trouble himself and also pulls in everyone around him. This is the kind of character he has long out-grown by his own virtue. However, the story has its own pitfalls, in that it's trying too hard to sell a conspiracy plot. In a Sherlock-meets-Robert Landgon twist, Balan is made to deduce quite a lot based on neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) eye movements, body language and a photographic memory. Remember the film 'The Tiger', where 'vappachiyude legacy' sort of clues keep showing up at the right time at the right place? It is something like that. And the rest is the sort of thrill and action necessary to sell a story with a conspiracy that the protagonists need to come out of.

Kodathi Samaksham Balan Vakeel is a run-of-the-mill thriller made for you to like and be in awe of the hero. It is demanding you to like him and root for him, sometimes out of sympathy and the other times for his intelligence. It is a story entirely revolving around that need to urge you to like him and appreciate his Sherlock-ian intelligence.

Synopsis

'Neeyum Njanum' is a love story, alright. But the plot goes beyond the realms of a conventional love story. It's a love story neatly packed in layers of thrill and comedy.

Story: Yakub has to pursue Hashmi, but they end up being a couple, even a happy couple at that. But, life is not a bed of roses for them. And then one day, Hashmi’s past shows up at her doorstep.

Review: The trailers of 'Neeyum Njanum' that released way in advance suggested a love story set in Malabar, a narrative told quite often. But, 'Neeyum Njanum' is a pleasant departure from the suspected narrative.

Yakub Muhammad, a special branch officer, falls in love with Hashmi while tailing her as a person of interest in an investigation. He pursues her enough that they end up a happily-married couple. But life has far more hurdles in store for them, including a stranger from her past that could shake her marriage to its core.

'Neeyum Njanum' is a love story, alright. But the plot goes beyond the realms of a conventional love story. It's a love story neatly packed in layers of thrill and comedy. With Sharaf U Dheen and Vishnu Unnikrishnan in the cast one is to expect comedy, no doubt. But given Sharaf U Dheen is the leading man here, his humor is quite subtle, honest and believable.

Given her recent performances, Anu Sithara, as Hashmi, is as good as one may expect. Vishnu Unnikrishnan is also commendable for his performance of subtle humor. Music being an important factor in the narrative, the songs of 'Neeyum Njanum' are thoroughly enjoyable. Kudos to Vinu Thomas. It keeps us engaged in the narrative without overdoing the Malabar cliche. Clinto Antony also gives the film a lift with his visuals full of life. However, written and directed by AK Sajan, 'Neeyum Njanum' is a narrative of our time, touching on themes of moral policing, religion, and politics. He creates Mylanchivalavu, a fictional village in Malabar, and its people as a reflection of the characteristic human instincts. And he uses sharp wit and wry sarcasm as his storytelling tools, making it a somewhat intelligent cinema.

The story of 'Neeyum Njanum' makes a slow start, shifting gears till it finds its sweet spot in the second half. It is safe to say, that only then does the story catch up. So, some level of patience is advised. There is a fine line between a Roadside Romeo and Romeo himself. And Sharaf U Dheen has famously played the creepy Roadside Romeo in many films (Premam), of which even references are made here. 'Neeyum Njanum' shows Yakub start as a Roadside Romeo transform into a Romeo by sheer persistence. And it's problematic implying that even though a woman has specifically stated her discomfort, it is ok to pursue her, often stalk her, so that she will eventually concur to your wish. Yes, this is a pattern being followed in cinemas since time immemorial, however, we as a society are, at the very least, learning to understand that 'a woman's no means no'.

'Neeyum Njanum' is a love story at heart which does not ignore the politics of religion and morality, that we see around us.

Vijay Superum Pournamiyum Review: Asif Ali & Jis Joy Come Up With Yet Another Lovely Movie!

January 14, 2019
Vijay Superum Pournamiyum

Star Cast: Asif Ali, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Siddique, Balu Varghese, Aju Varghese

Director: Jis Joy

With Vijay Superum Pournamiyum, the golden combo of Asif Ali and director Jis Joy are back again. We all know the huge impact that the combo's previous film Sunday Holiday had created and hence the expectations are good enough on Vijay Superum Pournamiyum as well. Has the movie lived up to those expectations? Read Vijay Superum Pournamiyum.

Plot

The core plot of Vijay Superum Pournamiyum revolves around Vijay and Pournami, two youngsters. Vijay is a lazy guy who has completed his graduation in Engineering. At the same time, Pournami aims to be an enterpreneur. The film takes us through the interesting events in their life.

Script & Direction

Jis Joy is well-known for his feel good movies and the writer-director follows the same path that he has been following but with some interesting characterisations. The facets of the lead characters have been etched evry nicely by the writer and ther chance encounters do make sense in the script. He has not resorted for any unwanted twists or turns and the film-maker maintains the same balanace and mood in the entire movie. Due credits must be given to the film-maker for controlling some of the sequeneces with panache, which could have gone on to the dramatic mode. Yes, at times one would feel that there is an over-dosage of feel-good elements but still they don't leave you bored at any point of time. Vijay Superum Pournamiyum does impart the right amount of positivity and happiness to the audiences.
